R1200GS  Differential Gearing Upgrade

RhineWest Performance is pleased to announce the release of an improved final drive ratio available for the R1200GS, GS-Adventure, HP2 and other R-model bikes 2004 through August 2006 production range. The factory installed 2.82 : 1 ratio is great for highway driving, however it provides inadequate low-end torque if you actually intend to ride two-up, in the dirt, or fully loaded off-road on expedition tours. The RhineWest Performance 3.0 : 1 ratio ring and pinion gear-set restores low end power for use in these conditions, and with a 6% change in final drive ratio, highway cruising engine speed increases about 500 RPM. If you would rather stay on the street, it could be used to put more lift under your front tire, or allow launch mode to be even more brisk.

Send us your differential and we will disassemble and inspect your bearings for wear and needed replacement, then we will call you with a specific price to install the gear-set in your existing differential. Time here in the shop should be 48 hours or less, then three to four days via FedEx ground back to your door. Best case scenario excluding freight or tax: $962.

Drive flanges are critical for the success of your new differential ratio. Early factory installed flanges have steel inserts for the lug bolts. Numerous final drives have been replaced under factory warranty that have had failures due to wear in the splined area of the flange where it slips over the main output shaft / ring gear assembly. Wear in the splines translates into play at the rear wheel, and a generally loose feeling in the rear end of the bike. BMW has an improved drive flange of a harder grade alloy that does away with the steel inserts. It is highly recommended that this late drive flange be installed if you don’t already have this version. In our own testing, early version flanges that fit well on the bench failed under load and in real world conditions. Add $226 for the drive flange if you have the early version with the steel inserts.
